Watch: Amidst Violence, 'God Warrior' Jacob Chansley Leads Prayer in Senate Chamber
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Lest we forget that Jacob Chansley – the now infamous avatar of the Capitol insurrection – calls himself an actor, the vivid video footage released by the New Yorker offers cockeyed validation. During a central sequence of the nearly 13-minute video filmed by correspondent Luke Mogelson, Chansley enters the Senate chambers as if he was a conquering Braveheart. "You guys are fucking patriots," he says to the group of intruders, reports the Times of Israel in a story about the video.
Perhaps it was Chansley's color-coded make-up that brought Mel Gibson to mind as he offers that warm shout-out to his comrades-in-arms with what one senses a keen understanding of Mogelson's camera. Passing an injured man on his smartphone he comments like a reporter, "Look at this guy. He's covered in blood. God bless you." (The man says he was hit by a rubber bullet.)
Always one for a good photo op, Chansley heads to Mike Pence's desk on the dais facing the senators. An anxious Capitol guard meekly admonishes him: "Is there any chance I can get you guys to leave the Senate wing? I just want to let you guys know this is like the sacredest place," he tells them.
Chansley has none of it as he plops down. "I'm gonna take a sit in this chair because Mike Pence is a fucking traitor," Chansley says, calling on another rioter to take a picture of him," writes the Times of Israel.
Then with Mogelson's camera just feet away, he scrawls a note to Mike Pence, which is captured in close-up. "ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME / JUSTICE IS COMING!" He later claimed the note wasn't a threat, reported CNN.
Chansley's footage begins at the 5:50 point in the video/
But instead of leaving as promised, Chansley returns to Pence's desk, this time with his cronies where he leads a prayer over a bullhorn in which he thanks God for (amongst other things) "being the inspiration needed to these police officers to allow us into the building, to allow us to exercise our rights, to allow us to send a message to all the tyrants, the communists, and the globalists, that this is our nation, not theirs." Upon reverently removing his horns to reveal his bald head, he continues with a televangical swagger as he repeatedly thanks the "divine, omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent creator God" for surrounding the insurrectionists with with "the divine omnipresent white light of love and protection, peace and harmony." He concludes with: "Thank you for allowing the United States of America to be reborn. Thank you for allowing us to get rid of the communists, the globalists, and the traitors within our government. We love you and we thank you, in Christ's holy name we pray."
Upon his return to his home in Phoenix, Chansley was arrested and denied bail in a hearing last Friday, Business Insider reports.
Saying that the Capitol takeover was not a protest, but a riot and insurrection, "the judge said of the events at the Capitol on January 6, saying that the context surrounding Chansley's alleged conduct was an important backdrop to her decision not to release Chansley ahead of his trial because he was a 'symbol of what occurred,' " Business Insider added.
