READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Cole Escola's smash Broadway play has been Jinkxed!
Happily, it turns out, with the announcement that "RuPaul's Drag Race" superstar Jinkx Monsoon will be heading to "Oh, Mary!" after she completes her stint with the Roundabout Theatre's current "Pirates! the Penzance Musical," which runs through July 27. Jinkx will go into "Oh, Mary!" on August 4 for a limited run through September 27. For more information, follow this link.
In a post on X, Monsoon writes: "Cole Escola is a genius and Oh, Mary! is one of the best things I've ever seen. Cole is easily the funniest person alive and I'm just lucky to be alive at the same time. If you can see it, kudos. If you can't, demand its return! It's B R I L L I A N T"
Monsoon has won two times on two editions of "RuPaul's Drag Race." She won the fifth season in 2013, then, in 2022, won the seventh season of "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars." She is the only contestant to win both shows. Monsoon was first seen on Broadway in 2023 as Matron Mama Morton in "Chicago." During her limited run, the show sold out. From April 2, 2024 to May 26, 2024, Monsoon portrayed Audrey in the Off-Broadway production of "Little Shop of Horrors." She currently stars as Ruth in "Pirates! the Penzance Musical."
Escola's play has been a word-of-mouth sensation since it first appeared off-Broadway in February 2024. Last summer it moved to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre, where it received rave reviews and has been sold out virtually its entire run thus far. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning two for Escola's performance (Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play) and for Sam Pinkerton (Best Direction of a Play). Escola ends his run on June 21 and will be replaced by Tituss Burgess, who subbed this past Spring to much acclaim. Jinkx will be the fourth actor to play the role on Broadway. During another of Escola's absences, Betty Gilpin took over.
According to Broadway World, "Oh, Mary!" became the first play in the Lyceum Theatre's "121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week and became the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning two Awards, and was also named a 2025 Pulitzer Prize Finalist."
