Chappell Roan served up a fresh new track during her inaugural appearance as musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend. "The Giver" is described as a "queer country song."
"Roan was introduced by host John Mulaney for her first performance of the night – and debut performance on the late-night sketch show ever – delivering an energetic rendition of her song, 'Pink Pony Club,' which is fittingly about her rise to fame and itch to become a performer," Teen Vogue relayed.
It was when the singer-songwriter returned for her second number that she "took the big moment to introduce a new, queer country song," the writeup went on to add.
The song was driven by percussion and guitars, and given a country flavor with a prominent fiddle line. At least three backup singers rounded out Roan's vocals, and the band wore country-inspired costuming, with Roan's own attire consisting of cowboy boots, a halter, and "Daisy Duke" short-shorts.
"The queer song is an ode to pleasure and Roan's giving nature, with the lyrics that say: 'You ain't got to tell me/ It's just in my nature/ So take it like a taker/ 'Cause baby I'm a giver,'" Teen Vogue said.
"Saturday's show was a big one, not only because of the fan favorites John Mulaney and Chappell Roan, but because Vice President Kamala Harris stopped by to join in on the cold open," Teen Vogue said.
The Associated Press also took note of the episode being the last one before the election, with Harris "playing herself as the mirror-image double of Maya Rudolph's version of her" during the opening sketch.
