"All of Us Strangers" writer-director Andrew Haigh says that the two leads in his gay romance drama had – and still have – an "amazing chemistry" together, People Magazine reported.
The magazine interviewed the 50-year-old "at the 2023 Gotham Awards Monday night [Nov. 27] in New York City," the article detailed. "There, he recalled how he, Scott, 47, and Mescal, 27, 'hung out' and 'got to know each other' ahead of making the romantic fantasy,'" People Mag added.
"They were so excited to work with each other, and I think that meant so much to them," Haigh, who is openly gay, said of the stars. "And they're really good friends now."
"They hang out all the time," the "Weekend" and "Lean on Pete" director added, "and so something special was created when they were working together, and they're still so close."
In the film, which Haigh adapted from the novel by Taichi Yamada, Scott's screenwriter character, Adam, becomes involved with a hot neighbor named Harry, played by Mescal. As their affair progresses, Adam is drawn back to his childhood home, where he meets his long-dead parents (Jamie Bell, Claire Foy) and finds them not only still alive, but as young as he remembers them from decades earlier.
Scott is the openly gay star of the popular series "Fleabag," while Mescal, who is reportedly dating American recording artist Phoebe Bridgers, has racked up a number of acclaimed roles, including as the young father in last year's film "Aftersun." He is also set to appear in Ridley Scott's upcoming "Gladiator 2."
The film scored nominations for four Gotham Awards," People Mag noted, "including best screenplay, best international feature, outstanding lead performance for Scott and outstanding supporting performance for Foy, 39."
Haigh told the magazine that he "can't even picture what anybody else would be like" in the roles that Scott and Mescal play in the film. Meanwhile, in real life, "They still like each other," the director said, "and they still text and see each other all the time."
"All of Us Strangers" comes to theaters Dec. 22. Watch the film's trailer below.
