It can be challenging to catch every movie and television series when it premieres on a streaming service. With new content dropping almost daily, it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to sift through the seemingly endless categories to find what you want to watch. But Hulu has you covered, as it continues to provide obsession-worthy offerings to its loyal subscribers.
From heartfelt romantic dramas to hilarious bangers, here is a list of some movies and television series that we are sure you will fall in love with.
"Rosaline"
Inspired by the ultimate tragic love story and based on the novel "When You Were Mine" by Rebecca Serle, "Rosaline" is a romantic comedy worth obsessing over. Starring "Dopesick" actor Kaitlyn Dever as the titular character, "Rosaline" takes William Shakespeare's classic "Romeo and Juliet" and spins it around as it tells the tale from the perspective of Romeo's betrayed ex, Rosaline. "Rosaline" brings comedic flair to a well-told story as we witness a woman scorned when she watches her true love get swept away by another. An ensemble cast helps elevate this first-class retelling with appearances by Isabela Merced, Kyle Allen, Minnie Driver, Bradley Whitford, and Christopher McDonald.
"Love, Victor"
"Love, Victor" stars Michael Cimino as a teenager on a quest for self-discovery as he moves with his family from Texas to Georgia. Not as financially well-off as some of his new classmates, Victor makes friends in his apartment building and at the coffee shop where he works. The series is a television adaptation of the 2018 film "Love, Simon," inspired to follow the same path of struggling with sexual orientation during high school years. "Love, Victor" spans three seasons of complex relationships, love, and loss, and social expectations within family acceptance. More diverse than "Love, Simon," the characters represented in "Love, Victor" speak to the stumbling one might experience as they adapt to the person they were always meant to be.
"Fire Island"
"Fire Island" is a love letter to queer friendship as writer and star Joel Kim Booster's screenplay is inspired by Jane Austen's seminal "Pride and Prejudice." The film depicts a group of gay male friends looking for love in all the wrong places while taking an annual trip to New York's Fire Island. Directed by Andrew Ahn, "Fire Island'' explores concepts ranging from sex and romance to good times, all while bringing hilarity and seduction with its whimsical ensemble cast. Costarring Joel Kim Booster, Matt Rogers, Bowen Yang, and comedian Margaret Cho, friendship and casual sex are at the heart of "Fire Island," complete with a happy ending.
"Vida"
A three-season obsession when it premiered in 2018 on Starz, "Vida" has landed at Hulu and should be on every television fan's list for its dramatic take on the family unit. The show stars Melissa Barrera and Mishel Prada as sisters who return to their childhood hometown of Boyle Heights after their mother passes away. The sisters are very different from one another, but bond over discovering more about their mother's past and true identity. "Vida" showcases tremendous performances from its lead cast as the series seeks to uncover familial connections, queer relationships, and cultural heritage. Breaking barriers across the board, "Vida" costars Ser Anzoategui, Chelsea Rendon, Carlos Miranda, Roberta Colindrez, and Maria Elena Laas.
"Princess Cyd"
In one of her earlier roles, actor Jessie Pinnick embodies the titular character of Cyd in "Princess Cyd," a South Carolina 16-year-old coming into her own while visiting her estranged aunt Miranda in Chicago for the summer. Miranda (Rebecca Spence) is a famous author and unapologetically religious, while Cyd is exploring her sexuality in a new city. This coming-of-age story traverses the various points of queerness and defending one's beliefs when Cyd falls for the nonbinary Katie (Malic White), much to the chagrin of Cyd's religious aunt. A constant battle of wit and faith is central to "Princess Cyd," a drama that seeks to find common ground amongst those unwilling to see another's point of view.
"The Bisexual"
Unappreciated during its one-season run on British television, "The Bisexual" is a dramedy available on Hulu about the struggles of coming out as bisexual. Desiree Akhavan co-created and stars in the series as Leila, a woman who has been in a long-term relationship with another woman, but decides to break it off to explore her desire to be with men. A turn of the tables of queer experimentation in a modern television series, Leila finds her bisexuality a problem for many of her lesbian friends. "The Bisexual" is a romantic comedy show that reflects on the many facets of being part of the queer community, while contemplating monogamous relationships and stepping out of one's comfort zone.
"Portrait of a Lady on Fire"
2019's "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" has seen a renaissance as of late, partly due to the romantic drama finding itself in the top 30 of Sight & Sound's latest critics' poll of the greatest movies of all time. A love affair between painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and aristocrat Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) is at the center of this 18th-century historical film. When Marianne is commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of Héloïse, the two find an attraction for one another that cannot be denied. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" is set against an isolated French island backdrop, tormenting the two women as their secret affair grows stronger. It is a slow burn of a movie that highlights the importance of artistic creation and erotic ambitions.
