Openly non-binary singer Sam Smith got a new tattoo that seemingly sums up their feelings about their gender identity, and the tattoo artist who inked the illustration posted an image of the finished work at Instagram.

People Magazine reports the singer-songwriter's new ink "depicts a young person standing in front of a mirror in underwear and high heels."

Miles Langford, the London tattoo artist who did the inking, posted photos of himself with the "Stay with Me" singer and the new ink that now adorns Shepard's right bicep.

Smith came out as non-binary in September 2019, in a post that announced they would be using they/them pronouns and referred to a life-long "war with my gender."

BuzzFeed recalled in a 2019 interview, Smith "revealed they had liposuction at 12 years old after a doctor discovered their body was storing excessive amounts of estrogen in their chest, giving them breasts."

Late last year, Smith opened up about being non-binary, telling CBS This Morning, "Queer people all around the world, we don't identify within those two places" of male and female.

"Gender, for me, has been nothing but traumatizing and challenging throughout my life," Smith said, adding, "I just feel like myself. I don't feel like a man, basically."

Smith went on to say that, despite facing intense backlash online, what they felt was a sense of relief. "After being able to talk about my gender expression," Smith said, "I feel such a weight has been lifted."
