What do you do in college when you're not in class or studying? Many party or sleep. But Dennis Mistrioty, Andy Gould and Griffin Lynch found another commonality: entrepreneurship. The life-long friends and eventual roommates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison started a small food service start-up. The experience whetted their palettes for something bigger, and within a few short but dedicated years, Batch by Wisconsin Hemp Scientific was born.

Wisconsin has a long history of hemp production (the plant from which CBD is derived) until it was prohibited in 1958. The Farm Bill in 2018 reversed that ruling, reviving the region's agricultural tradition and cracking the door for a wave of start-ups. The emerging industry matched the trio's interest in holistic healing as well as their business development and chemical engineering skill sets. But what happened next was atypical.

"Contrary to intuition, we didn't seek huge start-up seeding," says Mistrioty, Batch's CEO. "We traveled out west, toured farms and production and took notes on everything we saw. Rather than purchasing equipment, we built our own from the ground up at a fraction of the cost."

The team created its own extraction process, vertically integrated from bud to bottle (or balm, gummies or lotion). The full-spectrum product line meets federal regulations of no more than .3% THC (the psychoactive compound found in marijuana), which means no high, using 100% organic and GMO-free hemp—the majority of which is now sourced in their home state.

"We control the entire supply chain," says Mistrioty, "and can respond to customers' needs. We even offer free CBD samples because we believe everyone should at least try CBD to experience its potential benefits. Offering free CBD samples is our way of removing the common barriers that inhibit consumers from trying a new product."

The Batch team recognized that many news outlets were comparing the CBD industry to "The Wild West," with little regulation or oversight. Still, Mistrioty says the pandemic has "strangled the industry" as more than 28,000 CBD businesses compete for coveted consumer dollars. "The biggest thing we can do is exemplify transparency, revealing everything that goes into our process."

In its initial phase, Wisconsin Hemp Scientific created bulk extracts for other companies and offered product testing services for Wisconsin's emerging industry, enabling the young company to connect with industry players, universities and growers. Batch was born to preserve the brand and protect against irresponsible commoditization by sourcing high-quality hemp with best-in-class percentages of CBD and rich terpene profiles — aromatics that contribute to flavor profiles and offer additional benefits.

Batch spent months evaluating its market position and brand identity, leaning into its core values to create a name and design that exemplified the founders' mission to build long-term customer relationships by offering scientifically-based CBD products. The result is minimalist, modern and sophisticated packaging that's striking a chord with consumers. No longer do we expect the hippy, hand-drawn labeling of yesteryear's headshops. Batch is bringing CBD into the 21st century.
