After recently coming out during his HBO special "Rothaniel," Jerrod Carmichael is singing Ellen DeGeneres' praises for inspiring his own coming out journey, reported ET Canada.

Stopping her show on Friday, Carmichael referred back to how DeGeneres coming out on her early sitcom paved the way for others.

"You're like a gay, white Desmond Tutu," he joked before showing DeGeneres sincere gratitude.

"You faced coming out at a time when it just was impossible, there was no Ellen DeGeneres to show you what it's like," he said. "You faced a lot, but I watched it with my mom... my mom watched you and she laughed at you and you were welcome in the home."

Growing up in a Southern, Christian family, Carmichael says DeGeneres being seeing as OK in his household helped give him hope that he too would be accepted by his family.

He added, "I'm thankful for you because we both faced whatever obstacles coming out and everyone has their own personal journey."

About his own recent coming out experience, Carmichael says he was "terrified."

"I never thought I would publicly be out and gay. It was hard in that moment," he said.
