Gay Porn Star Turned German Spy on Trial for Treason

A gay porn star turned German spy is on trial for treason after allegedly planning jihadist attacks - something he said he did because he was "bored," the International Business Times reports.

The 52-year-old agent, only known as Roque M., was charged with leaking secrets about Germany's plans to fight radical Muslims in court in Dusseldorf Tuesday. He now faces espionage charges that could put him in jail for a decade.

Roque M. first made headlines in November 2016 after he was arrested "initially appeared to be a case of an Islamist mole at work in Germany's domestic spy agency," The Independent writes. He was let go in July after prosecutors dropped most of the charges as they found no evidence of an attack or ties to Islamist groups.

"I never met with any Islamists. I would never do that. The whole thing was like a game," the agent said in court, according to the German news agency, DPA.

Roque M., a father of four and a former banker, told the court he monitored the Islamist scene as part of his job for the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a position he called "a lot of fun." He said he became bored on weekends at home when he was looking after his disabled son. He then started to put himself in the world of online Islamists, reportedly saying it was "an escape from reality."

It was reported the agent even arranged a meeting with a suspected Islamist, but Roque M. said he never went through with it or even had the intention of going. But prosecutors argued the spy offered to help alleged Islamists gain access to the agency's headquarters in Cologne.

"An attack on the headquarters would be in line with Allah's will," Roque M. reportedly wrote in an email.

The agent was caught and arrested after he offered to share classified information with an undercover mole, Taccording to the International Business Times.

Since there was no evidence of an actual Islamist plot, Roque M. is facing just one charge of attempting to share state secrets. His trial is scheduled to run for five days, The Independent reports.
